European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “another example” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts point out that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
